“Scoop’s” answer the best for this question up to now…overall, quite a nice job of getting to the major points…
Bottom line: Anti-histamines ARE safe and effective if needed for a child — the allergy (if truly present) can only be to a perennial environmental allergen this young (i.e., danders, house dust mites, molds), as there has to be TWO pollen seasons lived through (one to get “sensitized” and the 2nd to become “hypersensitive” or “allergic!”) and this child is just 8 months of age.
Zyrtec is approved down to 6 months of age and is effective 1-2x/day if necessary. Benadryl is an old stand-by of course, but is much more highly sedating (but delivers poor sleep cycles which do not give restoritive sleep–which is why it should NEVER be given for its sedating SIDE EFFECT — plus is very drying!!).
