I have had allergies most of my life. I just started IT shots but they won’t work for a while. I’m very sensitive to the medications, all of them. I gain weight. I started taking singulair and using astelin but I’ve gained 5 lbs in a short time. This was the medication that my doctor gave me hoping to avoid the weight gain. Oh I forgot to mention that I am to start using Alegra in a couple of weeks for added protection against my spring hay fever. Does anyone have any suggestions? I’m getting tired of this.

Its pretty rare for babies to get hay fever but its not impossible. If you are sure then go back to your doctor because there are eyedrops available that can relieve symptoms. Poor baby i have suffered for years and its very unpleasant, wash her bedding regularly, keep doors and windows closed at night and if poss keep your babies bedroom window closed all the time. Try and avoid going out in the morning and evening as this is when the pollen count is highest. If you do go out then change her clothes when you arrive back home. If you have pets then this can make her allergy worse so try keep her away from them and if you can then keep them from the family room. I find a damp cold flannel wiped over my face and gently over my eyes very soothing, or if i am really suffering a bath and washing my hair really helps. I really feel for her, good luck xx P.s Its not safe to give babies under 1 year honey because of the risk of botulism.

In terms of antihistamine potency, you are not going to do much better, even if your child’s age, which you didn’t mention, would allow use of newer drugs. only about 40% of individuals, child or adult, get complete relief of symptoms with antihistamines alone anyway.
The next step would be to attack each symptom with a local application, again what you could use would depend on your childs age. You might need eye drops, sodium cromoglycate has no real lower age limit, and either sodium cromoglycate or topical steroid as a nasal spray.

I’ve had hay fever for about 4 years, and tried a few different tablets can’t remember exactly which ones, none of which have seemed to make a noticable difference. I’m currently using Zyrtek which was given to me by my doctor, and I take eye drops as well but my hayfever is still really bad, I can’t stop sniffing and sneezing. Should the tablets be more effective than this?…should I change my medication?
